EW validation climbs a ladder from cheap and controlled to expensive and realistic. Each rung catches errors before they reach the next, more expensive rung:
- Digital models & simulation: waveforms and scenarios purely in software — fast, repeatable, no spectrum needed.
- Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL): real EW equipment fed with simulated signals in a lab.
- Anechoic chamber: an echo-free, shielded room for measuring antenna and RF behaviour without interfering with the outside world or being interfered with by it.
- Open-air range: live against real or replicated emitters in the field — the most realistic, the most expensive, and strictly regulated in terms of spectrum use.
