- COMINT (Communications Intelligence): intelligence from communications — both the content and the metadata (who talks to whom, when, for how long, how often).
- ELINT (Electronic Intelligence): intelligence from non-communications emitters such as radar — the domain of ESM (EW: Electronic Support Measures).
- FISINT (Foreign Instrumentation Signals Intelligence): telemetry and control signals of weapon systems.
An important insight: even without deciphering the content, traffic analysis provides value. A sudden increase in message traffic or the appearance of a new radio net often betrays an imminent action. COMINT and COMJAM are therefore linked: you first have to understand a net — intercept, identify, locate — before you can disrupt it effectively.
