§17.1 Why EW against drones

Open §17.1 in the academy

Unmanned systems (UAS — Unmanned Aircraft Systems, popularly called drones) have become a dominant factor on the modern battlefield — and EW is a primary countermeasure. The reason is economic: drones are cheap, numerous and small (low RCS, low IR signature, Radar–6), which often makes kinetic defence too expensive or too slow. Firing a SAM costing hundreds of thousands of euros at an FPV drone costing a few hundred euros is a losing trade.

EW, by contrast, offers “magazine depth”: in principle a jammer can “fire” endlessly as long as there is power, at negligible cost per engagement. That is why the EW domain around drones has grown explosively in just a few years — nowhere more clearly than in the war in Ukraine (Lessons from Ukraine (open source)).
