The concepts in this chapter come straight from official military doctrine. For those who want to go further:
- NATO AJP-3.6 — Allied Joint Doctrine for Electronic Warfare (Edition C, STANAG 6018): NATO's basic doctrine for EW. (NATO publication; restricted distribution.)
- US JP 3-85 — Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations: the US joint doctrine that brings EW and spectrum management together under JEMSO. public (PDF).
- USAF AFDP 3-85 — Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations: the air force doctrine for EMSO. doctrine.af.mil.
- US Army FM 3-12 — Cyberspace Operations and Electromagnetic Warfare: the army doctrine that links EW and cyber.
- Association of Old Crows (crows.org): the international professional association for EW/EMSO, with many open publications and background material.
EW relevance
EMSO is the doctrinal roof over all the technology in this course: radar, IR, comms, GNSS and EW only become effective when they are coordinated with each other in the spectrum. For the EW specialist this chapter explains the “why” behind coordination, EMCON and planning — and why even the best jammer is worthless if it brings down your own network.
