The specialised SEAD role has historically been called Wild Weasel, born in the Vietnam War when SAMs first became a mass threat. The motto is “first in, last out”: the Weasels are the first to enter the threatened area to lure out and take down the air defence, and the last to leave so that the rest of the package stays protected.
The tactic revolves around deliberate provocation: show yourself, tempt the SAM radar into transmitting, and then strike with an ARM (Anti-radiation missiles and the operator's dilemma) as soon as it radiates. The notorious, euphemistic motto of the first Weasel crews was simply YGBSM, an abbreviation that aptly sums up how dangerous it is to offer yourself as bait. The role lives on in modern aircraft such as the F-16CJ and the EA-18G.
