The core of this chapter:
- EW is the fight for the electromagnetic spectrum: exploiting it for your own use, denying it to the opponent and protecting your own use.
- ECM (Electronic Attack) attacks: jamming, deception, decoys, chaff, flares, DIRCM and signature reduction — Electronic Counter Measures.
- EPM (Electronic Protection) defends your own sensors and links against those techniques — Electronic Protective Measures.
- ESM (Electronic Support) listens, identifies and warns — and has the physical advantage of the one-way distance — EW: Electronic Support Measures.
- The three pillars form a cycle: without ESM no targeted ECM, without EPM no surviving someone else's ECM.
The next three chapters work out the pillars one by one, starting with the attacking side: ECM.
